Champions

Humber has history of champions, and this year seems to be no different. This weekend the hawks were out in full force bringing home medals for us. First off men and woman's soccer were in Edmonton for the week, both teams were able to bring home a Bronze medal at the CCAA level which is a huge accomplishment for both teams. Also bring home medals from the National level where the cross country team who were in Fredrickton. Lindsay Webster and Nathaniel Green were awarded Gold medals, although were were no other national medals won by the cross country team many of the runners were able to attain a person best for the most part. Also the Humber girls team was able to finish in 4th place over all out of a total of 17 teams.

To go on the our very exciting Provincial medals brought home this weekend were the men and woman's rugby. The woman's team played on Saturday at Humber and were able to beat the Seneca Sting with a score of 15-7, for the teams first year of being together this is a great accomplishment for them, and we can only hope that there team can continue this in further years. The men's rugby team played on Sunday at Fletcher's Field in Markham against their long time rivals Mohawk Mountaineers. This year during league play the Humber boys had fallen short in both games but after a well executed game the boys were able to beat Mohawk with a score of 25-13. It was extremely exciting for the boys to finally be able to pull out the win against Mohawk, knowing that all of the boys were very anxious and nervous to play they left everything out on the field giving the fans a great game to watch.

For league games this weekend the men and woman's volleyball teams played Canadore on Saturday and the Nippissing on Sunday. Both teams were able to keep up there undefeated records over the weekend.

Congratulations to all of our Humber Hawks teams this weekend for all of their success.

Humber’s Men and Women Volleyball Win 27th Annual Humber Cup!

For the second consecutive year Humber’s men and women’s volleyball team won the Humber Cup! The women’s team was up against the Mohawk Mountaineers, while the men’s team was up against the Fanshawe Falcons. First looking at the women, they won both sets against the Mountaineers 25 to 19 and 25 to 22. What seems like an easy win for the women was actually a pain staking fight, at least in the second set. Mohawk did not give up the fight, but the lack of morale kicked in and sent them tumbling down.

On the other side, the men had a different story with a two set victory as well against the Falcons 25 to 21 and 27 to 25. According to Jim a journalist for Humber News “This match was tight from start to finish…Fanshawe seemed to have figured out the Humber attack”. Unfortunately for the Falcons, it did not take too long for Humber to press pass their onslaught and take the first set. Although, the next set had to be decided in “overtime” Humber managed to keep a defensive stance and watch as Fanshawe put the ball into the net to win it for Humber. You know what I say…there is no offense like a great defense.

In other news, Humber’s woman’s soccer team is heading to Edmonton to compete for the Nationals soccer title after winning the OCAA tournament. Hopefully with their almost flawless record of 7-0-1 they can become the first major sports team out of soccer, volleyball, and basketball to win a national title. Their first game is on November 10th, 2010, and they will be playing Northern Alberta Institute of Technology Ooks. I took the liberty to search what an Ook was so please click here: http://www.lspace.org/art/fan-art/images/ook.jpg

Last, I would just like to let you all know how much more athletic our rugby team is than Seneca Sting. Our Men’s rugby team won a whopping 39 to 0 on Sunday to advance to the finals. To be honest, I’m going to make an extremely precise speculation and say we’re going to take the championships for men’s rugby. The game is on November 14th, 2010 at 11:30am and they will be playing the Mohawk Mountaineers. Go Hawks Go!!

Humber Sweeps the OCAA

Humber Sweeps past the competition this week which extremely exciting for our Humber Hawk family! Men and Woman's OCAA championships were held at the soccer center in Vaughn. Both teams were able to dominate during the play offs, they were able to keep this momentum going and dominate in there final games. This giving us the Humber Sweep. The woman's soccer team had beat the Fanshaw Falcons 3-0 in the finals earning the OCAA Champions title, the boys shortly after beat the Seneca Sting 2-1 to receive the same title. This is very exciting because Humber College is still the the only school that has had both a men and woman's soccer teams won both titles in the same year and the last time this happened was in 2001.

To go along with our successful weekend the week was also very successful for the Humber Hawks the men and woman's volleyball teams came out strong against Conestoga College on Wednesday showing other schools that we are looking hold on to those provincial champion titles for another year. Men and woman's basketball also played on Wednesday the boys team was able to pull out the win against the Seneca Sting, but unfortunately the girls fell short although making a fight till the end.

Our Humber's male Rugby team also fell short on Thursday against the Mohawk Mountaineers with a score 8-7 this was a very unfortunate loss for the boys seeing that the Mountaineers were there biggest competition last year and again this year. Come out and support the boy on Saturday at Seneca College in there fight to finals!! Also, women's rugby has OCAA semi-finals this saturday @1pm at the Humber Valley Fields. Come show you support!!!

Also, Humber Cup Volleyball Tournament will be held for men and woman's volleyball teams in the OCAA so come out and support Humber volleyball and watch Humber Sweep this Friday or Saturday!

Fly Like A Hawk, Die Like A Seneca Bee

Fly like a hawk, die like a Seneca bee...some people call it luck, others, they call it faith, but we here a Humber College know that our varsity sports teams for the Humber Hawks have just pure skill! Looking back on October 23rd, 2010 (Saturday) our volleyball team competed in the finals at the Durham Adidas Cup. Getting there was no easy strut either, because Humber had to defeat Fleming, Durham, and Niagara. Finally, we end up at the finals in a face off (or net off, whichever you prefer) against our rivals (according to the Business School) Seneca College. The Seneca Stings is what they call themselves, but considering their defeat by the Hawks they stung too early in the competition and died (lost). Our Hawks yet again prove that we’re at the top of the food chain. Humber beat out the Stings at a 3-2 victory, and according to Jim, a journalist for Humber Athletics it was “a replay of last year’s OCAA Final”. Also, we would like to give a shout out to Terrel Bramwell for earning MVP and his teammate Paul Kemboi for being named all-star. We’re proud of you, and keep up the awesome job!

In more news pertaining to beating up on The Seneca Bees...I mean Stings. Our rugby girls have been having no trouble taking out the trash to earn first in their division. As it may be obvious, on October 27th, 2010 (Wednesday) our girls will be facing off against Seneca in a final game for first in the division. Now, I’m no expert, but I can speculate that considering the struggles Seneca had getting to be in the presence of our rugby girls we should not have any trouble. All jokes aside, this should be an awesome show and everyone available should go check out the game. GO HAWKS GO!

Just to show you skeptics out there what it's like to fly like a hawk and die like a Seneca bee...well almost a bee...check out this video below it will turn skeptics into believers :)

A Very Important Weekend for the Hawks Family In The CCAA

A very important weekend for the hawks family since many Hawks varsity games had been held over the weekend. One the most exciting events for Humber over the weekend was the CCAA Men's Golf Championships in Kamloops. The four some ended up taking individually Gold, Silver, Bronze and the fourth member came in 5th. The four some had won by a landslide winning with a score of 38 strokes which made them as a team 8 strokes under par. Along with the incredible win by Humber all four athletes had been elected as All Canadians for the year, adding Humber to the CCAA golf record book. Everyone is very proud of everything that theses athletes have achieved and can't wait to see what is in store for next year. Congrats Boys!

On another winning note men's and woman's soccer had both been able to defeat the mighty Sheridan Bruins for both teams to know attain the title of first place in the OCAA West Division. After Sheridan helped Humber with this great news they had been a good luck charm for our woman's volleyball team in their first season tournament this year. The woman's volleyball team was extremely successful once again with winning the Sheridan Tournament by a land slide no teams were able to gain more than 20 points against the team. The girls are very eager to keep the winning streak in tact for a forth year in a row and they certainly sent out the message to other teams in the league on the weekend that if they want to compete they are going to have to give it their all because the girls are definitely going to fight for another title this year.

Our rugby teams also played on the weekend with the girls team beating Fleming College 20-5 this year caption Lindsey Bradbury lead with two tries. this win putting them into a tie for first place in the division. Our men's rugby team was also very successful on Saturday winning 36-6. Contrary to the score it was a very intense game and the boys were able to show that they are ready to come fighting for the Mohawk Mountaineer's for the league title after Humber's upset last year! This truly was a very important weekend for the hawks family.

Keep checking back to find out more about our exciting Humber Hawks

Hawks Go Hunting This Thanksgiving for the St.Clair Saints

Hawks go hunting this thanksgiving...Oh when the Saints, go marchin’ in. Oh when the Saints go marchin’ in…HOLD ON THERE Louis Armstrong! Not this time. It looks like the Humber Hawks men’s baseball team served up another gluttonous win over the weekend against the St. Clair Saints in Windsor. The score at the end of the day on Sunday was 7 to 6; a very close game for our Hawks indeed. With this victory, it allowed them to move in to the Ontario division championship this Saturday for a best of three games in Oshawa. If both games are tied 1 to 1, then the boys will be playing at Centennial Optimist Park hosted by Humber.

When looking at woman’s golf, our girls went to the OCAA Championship in what was called a rebuilding state. We were led by Michele Lee and Jessica Payne who lead us to silver. On that note, individually, our girls came in third and fifth. Michele Lee had a 261 stroke, but increasing her performance each round (90, 87, 84). Jessica Payne, not as lucky as Michele, scored a 99, 84, and 87 to come to a stroke total of 270. Overall, the girls did a wonderful performance with all this pressure on them to do well. They have definitely exceeded my expectations considering I wouldn’t even be able to drive off the tee.

This weekend was also a serious moment for our women’s basketball team. Our girls will be traveling to Quebec’s Vanier College to challenge the best teams in the country. Hopefully they do well, and all the best no matter what happens this thanksgiving as hawks go hunting. GO HAWKS GO!
